KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Primary School’s Pave the Way campaign is gaining momentum, with work currently under way to transform the school’s ageing entrance and driveway into a safer and more welcoming space for learners, parents and visitors.
Workers from BMW Contractors have removed the deteriorating concrete and tarred surfaces, levelled the ground and began laying paving bricks on Monday 6 July.
Principal Ivor White said the school’s entrance had become a growing safety concern, particularly during the rainy season, when uneven surfaces, loose stones and gravel created hazards for everyone entering the school grounds.
“We want to provide a safe, welcoming and accessible environment for our learners, parents and community members,” he said.
The school aims to raise R500 000 through its Pave the Way campaign, which includes a BackaBuddy fundraising drive as well as an appeal to local businesses, organisations and residents to help fund the project.
White said the school hopes to complete the upgrade before the start of the next school term.

While R500 000 may not seem like a significant amount for a major infrastructure project, he said it represented a considerable investment for a state school.
“This is not a project that will be carried by one or two major sponsors. It is a community effort where many smaller contributions can make a big difference,” he said.
The campaign will also encourage learners to get involved through an internal fundraising competition. The class that raises the most money will receive R15 000 to spend on a school improvement project of its choice.
