KNYSNA NEWS - Knysna Primary School is appealing to the community to help raise R500 000 to transform its ageing entrance and driveway into a safe, welcoming and child-friendly space for learners, parents and visitors.
The school recently launched its Pave the Way campaign, which includes a BackaBuddy fundraising drive and an appeal to local businesses and residents to contribute towards this ambitious project.
According to principal Ivor White, the school's entrance has become a safety concern, particularly during the rainy season, with the uneven surfaces, loose stones and gravel posing hazards for those entering the school grounds.
"The school building is an old lady that requires constant care and systematic improvements," said White. "We want to provide a safe, welcoming and accessible environment for our learners, parents and community members."
The school hopes to complete the project before the start of the next school term.
White said the school had little choice but to replace the existing surface.
"We considered several options, including tar and cement, but paving was the best long-term solution, both practically and aesthetically. Visitors only get one chance to form a first impression, but more importantly, we want to create an environment that tells every child that this school cares."
Although R500 000 may not seem excessive to some, White said it was a substantial amount for a state school and that the project would only succeed if the broader community became involved.
"This is not a project that will be carried by one or two major sponsors. It is a community effort where many smaller contributions can make a big difference," he said.
The campaign will also involve the learners through an internal fundraising competition.
The class that raises the most money will receive R15 000 to spend on a school improvement project of its choice, whether that be a jungle gym, upgrading a bathroom or another initiative that will enhance their school environment.
"Children love a challenge. Once they become excited and involved, parents usually follow, and that is exactly the spirit we want to create," said White.
Knysna Primary has also approached local businesses to partner with the project and launched a BackaBuddy campaign in the hope of reaching a wider audience.
White said the school was fortunate to enjoy long-standing support from many businesses and members of the community.
"We know businesses are constantly approached for sponsorships and that there is only so much they can do, but Knysna Primary has always enjoyed strong community support, and we hope people will once again rally behind this important project."
Residents who would like to contribute can do so on the school's BackaBuddy page.
