MOTORING NEWS - The Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) has welcomed progress towards extending the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), saying the development brings encouraging news for South African exporters and the many workers whose livelihoods depend on strong international trade.
The United States Senate has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a two-year extension of the programme.
“This is good news for workers and for the South African economy. Trade that flows freely means jobs are more secure. Every vehicle and component that leaves our shores supports a chain of employment that reaches right into our dealerships and workshops.
"Anything that strengthens South Africa’s position in global trade is something workers can welcome,” says Martlé Keyter, MISA’s Chief Executive Officer: Operations.
AGOA supports South African exports
AGOA allows eligible African countries, including South Africa, to export qualifying goods to the United States without paying import duties.
The programme has been an important pillar of the South African economy, with the automotive sector among its largest beneficiaries. Following a period of uncertainty for exporters, the proposed extension provides some reassurance to industries and workers that rely on stable access to international markets.
Automotive industry benefits from US trade
While much of the attention has focused on agriculture and vehicle manufacturing, MISA says the benefits of AGOA extend deep into South Africa’s wider motor industry.
A strong automotive export industry sustains demand across the value chain, supporting jobs in vehicle manufacturing, dealerships, workshops, parts distribution and related services.
These businesses employ hundreds of thousands of South Africans, meaning the impact of automotive exports extends well beyond the companies directly involved in international trade.
“When our exporters can trade with confidence, the whole industry benefits, as do the workers and families who depend on it,” says MISA.
MISA highlights importance of secure jobs
MISA remains committed to championing the interests of workers in the motor industry and supporting the growth of a sector that is a vital source of employment and economic opportunity in South Africa.
The association says stable international trade is important not only for exporters and manufacturers, but also for the workers and families whose livelihoods depend on the broader automotive and retail motor sectors.
“Stable trade means secure jobs, and that is what matters most to our members,” says MISA.
