KNYSNA NEWS - Carmen's School of Dance in Knysna and its young dancers made their mark at the recent Theatre Dance Association's regional competition in Mossel Bay.
The competition, which travels to regions across the country, brought together dancers aged between seven and 17.
The Knysna dancers delivered a strong showing, earning an impressive 27 awards across the various achievement categories. Their results included eight gold first-place awards, one gold second-place award, 13 silver first-place awards and five silver second-place awards.
The competitors were assessed across four achievement categories: honorary mention for scores of 64% and below, bronze status for 65% to 74%, silver status for 75% to 84%, and gold status for scores between 85% and 100%.
At each level, dancers could earn first, second or third place. Those achieving bronze, silver or gold status also qualified for the upcoming Move! national dance competition in Cape Town in September.
Adding to the excitement, Elizabeth Pomeroy-Ward received a special discretionary award, being named the regional baby star of the event.
"I am extremely proud of the dedication and effort shown by every student who has given their best while growing in experience and enjoyment.
Beyond the medals and placements, the competition gave the young dancers valuable experience in a professional, high-calibre environment," Teacher Carmen de Sousa said.
With their sights now set on Cape Town, these Knysna dancers will take their talents to the national stage in September, where they will compete against their peers from across South Africa.
