KNYSNA NEWS - A young gymnast from Knysna, Euphre'za Witbooi, has made her hometown beam with pride after a stellar performance at the recent South African Gymnastics Championships in Pretoria.
Competing in the Level 5 U12 category, Witbooi impressed judges with her skill, claiming gold in the vault event and finishing seventh overall in her division.
The talented 11-year-old trains at the Knysna Gymnastics Club under the guidance of coach Yvette Share, whose support and mentorship have played a key role in Witbooi's development.
Just a month before the nationals, Euphre'za showcased her consistency at the Western Province Championships in Saldanha Bay, where she brought home a gold and a silver medal, setting the stage for her national success.
Her journey to the national stage was made possible through a community effort with local residents, businesses, and her school, Fraaisig Primary, rallying together through donations and fundraising events to make her dream a reality.
How did it all begin?
When asked how her love for gymnastics began, Euphre'za said: "When I did my first middle split at home, my cousin Patynn kept on talking and showing us the art of gymnastics. That's when I knew I wanted to do it too."
Her proudest moment so far?
"When I received my gold medal at SA Champs," she said without hesitation.
Behind the scenes, Euphre'za follows a disciplined routine.
"The first thing I do when I walk into the gym is stretch, and then I do my vault," she explained. "Before I compete, I pray and coach Yvette always gives me a motivational note to keep with me."
Outside of gymnastics, Euphre'za enjoys doing handstands for fun and spending time with friends who have been cheering her on throughout her journey.
"My friends and teachers at Fraaisig Primary motivate me to do my best, and they even helped with fundraising for the big competitions."
When asked what the biggest lesson is that she learnt from gymnastics, her answer reflected her growing maturity and determination: "To not give up. when you fall, get back up."
And as for her biggest supporters? "My parents, sister, grandparents, and coach Yvette. Thank you for supporting me on my journey so far."
