PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Local athletes shone at what has become known as the biggest fitness festival in the Eastern Cape.
This past weekend, three CrossFit Plett athletes made it onto the podium at the Fittest in PE (FiPE) CrossFit-style competition at the Sun Park Arena in Gqeberha, which ran from 27 to 29 September.
The competition, which saw individuals and teams from across the country compete for this fitness title, involved athletes battling it out in various disciplines from weightlifting and gymnastics to functional fitness movements and general fitness tests.
In the beginner male category, Simthembile Notshulwana from CrossFit Plett proved his mettle, taking third place. CrossFit Plett athletes dominated the male teen division for youngsters aged between 16 and 17, with James Coetzee taking second place and Matthew Lancaster securing the final podium spot.
'Truly fantastic'
"I’m really proud of every single team member at CrossFit Plett. Everybody’s individual performance was truly fantastic. We had a mix of experienced athletes and a few beginners, but everyone excelled.
"The success really boils down to the hard work that each and every person has put in over the last few months," CrossFit Plett owner Donald Ravenscroft said.
'Key factors'
"Often, when we say that success is built on hard work, it might sound like a cliché, but for us, that dedication is tangible and visible in so many ways. Our team’s performance isn’t just the result of physical effort, but a culmination of several key factors."
He added that one of the important aspects contributing to their success was their approach to goal-setting. "Whether it’s a newcomer or a long-standing member, every four to five months, we sit down with each athlete and conduct a detailed goal-setting session.
'Structured path'
"We discuss what they hope to achieve in the next three, six, or twelve months, and even look two years' ahead. This helps create a focused and structured path for them to follow."
Ravenscroft said that not everyone had aspirations of competing; some just want to become a bit fitter and stronger for their day-to-day lives. "This clarity in goal-setting helps bring focus and purpose to their training. When people know why they are training, it’s easier to stay committed."
'Sustained effort'
He added that another major factor was consistency. "Fitness isn’t built overnight. It’s a result of sustained effort over time."
Ravenscroft said they also viewed health holistically. "We emphasise not just training but also other aspects such as nutrition, sleep, and overall lifestyle. We want our members to eat well, sleep well, and establish healthy relationships with their bodies and fitness journeys."
He added that these factors were what brought their athletes success at FiPE. "The results reflect not just the effort of the last few weeks but the cumulative dedication of the past few months."
