KNYSNA NEWS - For decades, the Knysna elephants have captivated the imagination of nature lovers, scientists, and storytellers alike.
Known for their elusive nature and rich history, these legendary creatures have become a symbol of the untamed wilderness of the Southern Cape.
Since 2018, one dedicated researcher, Ryno Joubert, has embarked on a remarkable journey to unravel the full story of these enigmatic elephants through a comprehensive and meticulously researched book.
'Definitive resource'
"My goal is to create a definitive resource that captures their rich history, ecology, and the many stories surrounding them.
"This journey has led me to interview individuals with direct historical connections to the Knysna elephants, including retired foresters, SANParks employees, local fern-pickers, and renowned elephant trackers Wilfred Oraai and Karel Maswati.
'Invaluable insights'
"Many of these individuals are now in their late 70s, 80s, or 90s, and I am honoured to preserve their invaluable memories and insights."
In addition to these first-hand accounts, Joubert says that he has gathered information from researchers, scientists, and forest workers, as well as individuals involved in the events that led to the death of a well-known elephant bull in 1971. Due to his advanced age, he had begun seeking out softer plants, bringing him into conflict with forest workers and their cultivated land.
'Scientific studies'
"I have also sourced archival materials, including old newspaper articles and scientific studies."
With the help of dedicated Sedgefield resident Gill Thomas, I have accessed valuable resources from libraries and museums in Knysna and George.
"Additionally, I obtained resources from the National Library of South Africa in Cape Town with the assistance of a librarian.
"The manuscript is progressing well, with completion expected later this year, followed by editing in late 2025 or early 2026.
'Sincere gratitude'
"I want to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who has contributed stories, photographs, and historical information, as well as to those who have offered words of encouragement.
"Every contribution is deeply appreciated, and all contributors will be credited in the final publication."
