KNYSNA NEWS - From pounding forest trails and tackling marathon distances to battling it out on the rugby field, paddling across the lagoon or trying the fast-growing sport of padel, this year's Knysna Oyster Festival promises 10 days of non-stop sporting action.
Running from 3 to 12 July, South Africa's premier winter sporting festival will once again transform Knysna into a playground for elite athletes, weekend warriors and families, and dozens of events will cater for every age and fitness level.
The 2026 programme blends iconic festival favourites such as the Knysna Forest Marathon and Cycle Tour with rugby, golf, canoeing, netball, trail running, fitness activities and community sports.
Many events also offer shorter distances or beginner-friendly options, making it easy for families to get involved.
Some of the major sporting highlights include:
- Knysna Forest Marathon
The iconic Knysna Forest Marathon remains one of the festival's biggest drawcards. The weekend includes registration and expo activities, a marathon market and race-day action through the spectacular Knysna Forest, attracting runners and supporters from across the country.
- Knysna Cycle Tour
The Knysna Cycle Tour returns with a full programme of mountain bike races, road events and family-friendly rides. Registration takes place at the festival hub ahead of the weekend's racing.
- Southern 10s
Loerie Park will host the Southern 10s Rugby Tournament, bringing fast-paced rugby and a lively festival atmosphere to the sporting programme.
- Running, walking and fitness
Running enthusiasts are also spoilt for choice with the Crazy Store 4.8km Fun Run, the Houtkapper Trail Run, the Cansa Walk, the Cross-country Development Series and the ASWD Street Mile. Festival-goers can also join Secret Sunrise sessions, Pilates classes, barre workouts and the Simola Sunset 5km Wine Walk.
- Water sports
Water sports include the RE/MAX Canoe Polo Tournament at the Knysna Waterfront, the Harbour 2 Heads Canoe Race and the ever-popular tug o' war, during which teams test their strength and teamwork.
The Knysna Estuary Underwater Trash Bash combines adventure with environmental conservation, inviting snorkellers and scuba divers to help protect one of Knysna's greatest natural assets.
- Golf, netball and community sports
The golf days at the Knysna Golf Club and Simola Golf and Country Estate, a Knysna Oyster Festival netball tournament, a community soccer tournament culminating in finals at Loerie Park, and a range of community sporting activities round out the programme.
"The Knysna Oyster Festival has always been about participation as much as competition.
Whether you're tackling a marathon, trying padel for the first time, joining a fun run, paddling on the lagoon or simply cheering from the sidelines, there are countless ways to be part of the action," said Lungiswa Goya, Knysna Municipality's manager of economic development and the festival's spokesperson.
The full festival programme is available on www.knysnaoysterfestival.co.za.
