NATIONAL NEWS - Public Works and Infrastructure Minister, Dean Macpherson, and Executive Mayor of City of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis will today host the next leg of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) listening tour in Tafelsig, Cape Town.
The nationwide EPWP listening tour aims to engage directly with communities about their experiences with the programme, address challenges and gather insights to inform a re-imagined EPWP focused on long-term socio-economic empowerment.
The Minister and Mayor will be joined by the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg and Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Carl Pophaim.
According to the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, the Listening Tours will inform the Minister’s vision towards the reimagined EPWP, which will have long-term socio-economic empowerment within the communities.
“Through the listening tour, which will be rolled out nationwide in the coming months, the Minister aims to hear from communities about their experiences with the EPWP to bring attention to issues encountered within the programme.
“The tour and engagement with communities will also shape the Minister’s vision to reimagine the EPWP,” the department said.
The EPWP is a medium-to long-term government-funded programme that promotes the use of labour-intensive methods to create work opportunities for poor and unemployed South Africans.
In addition to gaining skills and earning an income, the work opportunities also allow participants to gain valuable work experience that make them employable. – SAnews.gov.za
