KNYSNA NEWS - Fourteen local workers and community members have gained valuable new skills through two training programmes linked to a Knysna Municipality infrastructure project.
The training, funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), forms part of the municipality’s efforts to ensure that local people employed on infrastructure projects gain practical skills that can improve their long-term employment prospects.
Six participants - three labourers employed by Vitsha Trading and three community members - completed an NQF level 1-aligned course from 27 to 31 July in the installation of gabion structures.
The training provides practical knowledge of gabion construction while also creating an opportunity for the participants to work towards a full NQF level 1 qualification.
A further 10 participants attended basic first aid level 2 training on 6 and 7 August. The group comprised four Vitsha Trading labourers and six community members.
The first-aid training equips participants to respond to emergencies and could also improve their prospects of taking on health and safety representative responsibilities on future municipal projects.
The municipality said incorporating skills development into infrastructure projects ensures that workers and community members gain competencies that remain valuable beyond the completion of a specific project.
The initiative forms part of the municipality’s broader commitment to creating employment and training opportunities while strengthening the skills base of local communities.
