GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - With elections having come and gone, we take a look back at how you, the residents of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, cast your provincial and national results on 8 May.
As was expected, the DA managed to dominate in the Western Cape once again, albeit with considerably fewer votes, while the ANC also lost a large number of votes.
On the provincial legislature front, the DA lost two Western Cape municipalities – Cederberg (to the ANC), and Kannaland (to the Independent Civic Organisation of SA or Icosa) – while on the national front it lost five Cape municipalities – Cederberg, Beaufort West, Laingsburg, Witzenberg (to the ANC), and Kannaland (to Icosa).
When it came to provincial legislature votes, the DA and ANC seemed to lose a lot of their votes to the EFF, ACDP, VF Plus, and Aljama, parties which all reflected a substantial increase from the 2014 elections. Then there was, of course, the addition of Patricia de Lille's Good party to the ballot, which found itself ahead of the ACDP and VF Plus parties in provincial legislature results.
Southern Cape results
The trend of the DA and ANC losing votes seemed to extend to the Southern Cape, where the DA lost votes in Knysna, Oudtshoorn, and George, while actually picking up support in Bitou and Mossell Bay, all while the ANC lost votes in all five of the aforementioned municipalities. In Knysna, despite the DA losing 132 provincial votes, it was the most-voted for party in the provincial elections, leading the area with a 50.65% (0,17% drop) majority with the ANC in second place with 36.48% (2.64% drop), and EFF third with 2.82% (1.65% increase).
Bitou on the other hand saw increases for both the DA and EFF, with the DA receiving the most provincial votes with 49.18% (3.5% increase) of the votes followed by the ANC with 40.21% (7.99% drop) and the EFF with 3.43% (1.56% increase). The national results reflected a similar show in both municipalities, but the DA fell short of 50% in Knysna.
In the provincial elections in Knysna there was a voter turnout of 63.17% with 282 spoilt votes, and in the national elections in Knysna there was a voter turnout of 65.44% with 462 spoilt votes. In the provincial elections in Bitou there was a voter turnout of 66% with 182 spoilt votes and in the national elections it was 68.87% with 181 spoilt votes.
