KNYSNA NEWS - Action and eviction of vagrants will happen this week as first steps to clean up the two homes in Knysna that have become notoriously known as the "houses of horror".
These houses were reported on last month as inhabited by vagrants creating a living environment that can only be described as horrific not only for them, but also for neighbours.
The one house, which has become a "nightmare" in the neighbourhood, is known as the "magistrate's house" since it was used by the chief magistrate from 1950 and the Department of Justice until a couple of years ago.
It seems the last person to live in it was the senior public prosecutor who vacated the house and moved to Bloemfontein in 2011.
The other house, which has also been completely trashed and vandalised, is in Mount Joy/Graham Road, Upper Central.
Both houses are havens for drugs and crime.
According to the Knysna municipality, "Erf 460 in Agnar Street (old Drostdy) as well as Erven 3406, 3407 and 3408 are all registered under the Department of Public Works even though it was utilised by an official of the Department of Justice."
The Department of Public Works was notified by the municipality of the problem, no sooner than it was reported to them, but apparently nothing has been done yet.
This prompted Knysna municipal manager Grant Easton to say on Monday, June 13, "Law enforcement and SAPS will evict the illegal occupants this week. The property belongs to the Department of Public Works and we have communicated with them and requested that they deal with the matter urgently. If the department does not respond to our request we will appoint a contractor to clean the premises and send the bill to Public Works."
If the responsible government department does not clean up the house they own in Agnar Street, which has been trashed by vagrants, the municipality say they will clean it up for them and send them the bill. A broken trolley lying by the garage is the least of the rubbish as this house is vandalised to the point where all fittings have been removed, there is rubbish strewn around it and even human faeces are in the rooms.
