KNYSNA NEWS - Lower division outfit Leeds United FC from Hornlee produced the upset of the tournament when they defeated Regional League side Smuts United 2-1 to win the 2026 Oyster Festival soccer tournament at Loerie Park Stadium this past Sunday.
More than 30 teams competed in this year's tournament, with Leeds United overcoming several of Knysna's established clubs on their way to the title and the R50 000 first prize.
Leeds goalkeeper Gaylon Williams was one of the standout performers throughout the competition and again proved decisive in the final. His series of acrobatic saves frustrated Smuts United as they searched for an equaliser.
Leeds made a confident start and opened the scoring through Charne Kampher after capitalising on a set-piece opportunity outside the penalty area. They doubled their advantage before half-time when Alfonzo Heneke finished off a move down the left flank to give his side a 2-0 lead at the break.
Smuts United dominated much of the second half in search of a comeback. Brandon Kasanya came close when his powerful effort struck the post before Clinton April reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Despite sustained pressure and several chances inside the box, Smuts United were unable to find a second goal as Leeds' defence stood firm until the final whistle.
Leeds' coaching duo, John Andrews and Malcolm Fuller, ascribed the victory to thorough preparation and teamwork.
Smuts United received R20 000 as runners-up, while defending champions FC Rebels finished third.
