3rd Mossel Bay open-water swim for sharks postponed

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Kane Johnstone (19) will soon return to Mossel Bay’s waters to complete the third and final open-water swim of Project Deep.

This 13km swim, from Dana Bay to The Point in Mossel Bay, was set to take place on Saturday 5 September, but has now been postponed to 12 September due to challenging ocean conditions.

Project Deep is an endurance swimming campaign created to raise awareness of the ecological importance of Mossel Bay’s shark populations and to advocate for a proposed shark catch exclusion zone (Scez). It began with Johnstone’s gruelling 22km crossing from The Point to Glentana Beach on 19 February. The second swim on 4 April covered about 14km from Fransmanshoek to Dana Bay’s First Beach. The third swim will complete the connection.

The project is in partnership with the Earth Legacy Foundation, which announced the postponement earlier today. Aside from the challenging ocean conditions, the foundation said there were also concerns around the safety of the support vessel and crew.

“While Kane remains prepared to take on the challenge, the decision has been made to prioritise the safety of the full team supporting the swim.”

The third swim is subject to suitable weather and ocean conditions, and the foundation said it would share further updates as 12 September approaches.
