Update
KNYSNA NEWS - For Rianca Nel, motherhood began with a plan for one baby. Three years later, she is raising two energetic little boys who arrived in her life in the most unexpected way. At just 20, Nel was preparing to welcome a baby girl when she went into labour on 24 May 2023.
After giving birth, she believed the delivery was over. But her mother noticed that Nel's stomach was still noticeably swollen and asked the nurses why.
"They said it was the afterbirth. So the nurse pressed on my tummy and then said, 'No, there's another baby. You have to push'. At that moment I was in shock. I suddenly realised I was not going home with one baby girl but with two boys instead," Nel recalls.
Even though Jordan and Logan were born as an unexpected pair of twins, Nel describes her eventual fate as a 'big blessing'. Three years later, people still find it difficult to believe that the fact that she was carrying twins went undetected.
Two boys, two personalities
Today, Jordan and Logan are three years old and keeping their mother very busy. "They are very hyperactive and very, very demanding little boys."
Despite being twins, the brothers are very different from each other, with their own interests, personalities and favourite things. For Nel, raising twins has been challenging, particularly as a single, unemployed mother.
One of her biggest challenges has been making sure that both boys have everything they need.
"I always asked myself, how am I going to raise two babies at once?"
Fortunately, Nel has had her mother by her side since the boys' birth and continues to rely on her support.
Some of Nel's most treasured memories have been watching her sons reach important milestones.
The day they were born, and later when they started walking and talking, remain among the most special moments of her journey as their mother.
A blessing remembered
The arrival of two boys was a major shock for the family, but Nel says everyone adjusted well. Today, her mother, oldest sister and boyfriend are among those closely involved in the boys' lives.
After they were born, the family launched the Double Blessing Boys BackaBuddy campaign to assist Nel and her newborn twins. The support she received made a difference during a difficult period.
"I still remember some of the people who supported me and my family and for that I will always be grateful," she says.
