KNYSNA NEWS - AfriForum and Go Green Knysna recently donated trees for the Brenton wetland project following the extensive damage suffered in the June 2017 fires.
The trees were planted on 16 February to commemorate World Wetlands Day that took place on 2 February this year.
“Trees stabilise the soil for optimal rehabilitation, creates an environment for better plant growth, serves as a habitat and provides food for the broader biodiversity in a wetland,” said Chris Boshoff, coordinator for environmental affairs at AfriForum.
Environmental planning manager at Knysna municipality Pamela Booth explained that each tree was "adopted" by local residents and that they will now be "nurtured into a small forest”.
“It is important to protect wetlands and to ensure that our essential ecosystems are functioning optimally within unique biodiversities," said Boshoff.
"AfriForum is sensitive to the use of water during the current drought crisis and therefore a wetland is an ideal place to plant trees as municipal water does not have to be used to water the trees.”
