PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The youth sailing team from the Cape Flats, renowned since last year as the Alexforbes Angel Wings Crew following their remarkable 3 300-nautical-mile Cape2Rio transatlantic crossing, will headline the closing session of the Marine Science Symposium at the 2026 Plett Ocean Festival.
Taking place from 3 to 12 July, with the symposium running from 10 to 12 July, the festival's fifth anniversary promises a celebration of ocean science, adventure and conservation.
Inspiring addition to the programme
Fresh from their historic first-place handicap victory in the demanding Cape2Rio race, the members of the Royal Cape Yacht Club Sailing Academy team will share their extraordinary journey with the festival-goers.
These young sailors captured international attention after overcoming severe damage to their yacht in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Despite losing their boom and being unable to use a spinnaker sail, the crew persevered and extended their lead to secure a memorable victory.
The attendees will hear from skipper Sibusiso Sizatu and crew members Philasande Gwala and Yonela Temela, who will speak about the challenges they faced and the teamwork, determination and seamanship that carried them to success.
A fitting finale
Festival director Cindy Wilson-Trollip said the crew's appearance would provide an inspiring conclusion to three days dedicated to exploring and celebrating the ocean.
"Alongside the marine scientists and researchers who bring the ocean and its creatures to life through their work and stories, we are thrilled to close the symposium with Sibu, Philasande and Yonela, whose extraordinary adventure reminds us that anything is possible," she said.
Sizatu, who has more than 18 years' sailing experience, is also an instructor at the Royal Cape Yacht Club and is passionate about developing young sailors and encouraging greater inclusivity in the sport. "Sailing is open to everyone, and anyone can achieve success with passion, dedication and teamwork. We look forward to bringing our story to Plett," he said.
