KNYSNA NEWS - The possible extension of Acting Municipal Manager Boy Manqoba Ngubo’s position at Knysna Municipality is hanging in the balance as allegations of fraud and corruption have surfaced just as his three-month term comes to an end today, Wednesday 5 August. Ngubo was appointed to the role in May following a tenure at Bitou Municipality.
The matter took centre stage during a special council meeting on Tuesday 4 August, where councillors were informed that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) had reportedly been instructed to investigate the allegations.
According to information presented during the meeting, the allegations stem from matters relating to Ngubo’s previous tenure at Bitou Municipality.
Council was informed that relevant reports from Bitou Municipality must first be obtained and considered, together with the concurrence of Western Cape Local Government MEC Anton Bredell, before any decision can be taken on the renewal or extension of Ngubo’s acting appointment.
Councillors were told that, once the reports from Bitou Municipality have been received and the MEC’s concurrence has been obtained, the matter will be referred back to council for consideration.
The allegations and the reported Hawks investigation dominated discussions during the special council meeting, however, no evidence supporting the allegations was presented, and no findings have been made against Ngubo.
At the time of publication, media enquiries had been sent to Knysna Municipality, Bitou Municipality, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) requesting comment on the allegations and the reported investigation.
