KNYSNA NEWS - One of Knysna's most iconic and elusive residents will be featured on national television this weekend when the popular conservation programme, Bewonder & Bewaar, shines a spotlight on the endangered Knysna seahorse.
The Knysna seahorse is South Africa's only endemic seahorse species and is found exclusively in a handful of estuaries along the Southern Cape coast.
In Knysna, the tiny creatures inhabit the murky waters of the estuary, making them notoriously difficult to find.
In the upcoming episode, presenter Bonné de Bod joins SANParks marine scientist Clement Arendse on an underwater survey to monitor the distribution and abundance of the species.
Equipped with scuba gear, the pair search through extensive seagrass meadows in the estuary in an effort to locate the well-camouflaged animals.
The programme offers viewers a rare glimpse into the scientific work being conducted to better understand and protect one of South Africa's most unique marine species.
It also highlights the important role the Knysna Estuary plays in supporting the survival of the tiny seahorse, which has become a symbol of the town.
For many visitors, images of the Knysna seahorse are synonymous with the town itself, yet few ever get the opportunity to see one in its natural habitat.
The episode of Bewonder & Bewaar, featuring English subtitles, will air on kykNET (DStv channel 144) on Sunday evening at 20:30. It will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
