PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - In collaboration with Plett Tourism and the Black Mermaid Foundation, Adopt a Swimmer founder Louise Auersperg has been turning the tides through swimming, water safety and education for the past five years.
Her milestone was marked with a special day of adventure, education and water empowerment at Keurbooms Lagoon, celebrating five years of collaboration between Adopt a Swimmer, Plett Tourism and Zandile Ndhlovu, widely known as the 'Black Mermaid'.
The event formed part of the Currents of Courage Programme, an initiative that has created meaningful opportunities for 11 adults and 20 children to experience and learn about the rich and diverse marine life found along the Garden Route coastline.
"Together, we can continue to create ripples of courage that reach far beyond the water," said Auersperg.
Building confidence through water
For many participants, these experiences are opportunities they would otherwise never have had. The programme introduces both children and adults to swimming, water safety and marine conservation, while helping them build confidence, independence and life-saving aquatic skills.
The activities during the celebration included snorkelling in the clear waters of the Keurbooms Lagoon, an educational shark-spotting experience and thrilling rides aboard the Malibu rescue boat with the Plett Lifesavers team.
"There were plenty of smiles, plenty of excitement and, naturally, a few moments of 'Are we really doing this?' before the participants discovered just how much courage they had beneath the surface," Auersperg said. She explained that learning to swim is about far more than mastering strokes. "It is about confidence, independence, safety and discovering that the water can be a place of possibility rather than fear."
Creating lasting opportunities
According to Auersperg, the impact of the programme extends well beyond the swimming lessons themselves.
One of Adopt a Swimmer's former students recently completed a master's qualification in open water diving in Sodwana Bay and is preparing to begin an instructor's course - an inspiring example of how access to opportunities and encouragement can transform a person's future.
Another participant has, after just one year in the programme, progressed to volunteering in the lagoon, giving back to the initiative that helped empower her. "This is the ripple effect of water empowerment," Auersperg said.
She added that water-based activities offer a wide range of developmental benefits, including improved brain activation through bilateral movement, enhanced spatial awareness, better memory recall and increased circulation and oxygen delivery to the brain.
For children who often spend much of their time in confined living spaces, the opportunity to move freely, explore nature and experience the water can have a particularly positive impact on both their physical and emotional well-being.
Power of collaboration
As part of recognising the programme's achievements, Plett Tourism also facilitated the attendance of 12 adult swimmers at a prestigious marine symposium, giving many the opportunity to attend an event of this nature for the first time. For every participant, it was an opportunity to experience something new and broaden their horizons.
Auersperg said these moments demonstrate what meaningful partnerships can achieve. "Adopt a Swimmer would also like to acknowledge the incredible community of people who continue to make this work possible.
From the coaches and volunteers who generously give their time, to the partners who open doors, create opportunities and believe in the potential of every swimmer, this programme truly is a team effort."
She said providing access to the water offers far more than swimming lessons. "When we give someone access to the water, we give them confidence. We give them opportunity. We give them a chance to discover a world they may never have known was within their reach. And sometimes, we give them the courage to swim towards an entirely new future."
