PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The inaugural Plettenberg Bay Street Mile on 20 December has been given a boost with Planet Fitness stepping in with support.
"This is sure to make it one of the most attractive Street Mile races in South Africa," says organiser Nico Westraat.
What makes Plett's street mile stand out above the rest is that it will be free for youngsters under 19, the first time this concession has been made in South Africa.
"This will be a truly community-based race to encourage as many locals as possible to enter," said Westraat.
The race is not a fun run, but is aimed at serious competitors that have been sanctioned by Athletics SA.
The requirement will be that runners are able to complete a mile (1 609m) in under eight minutes. The event caters for all ages, from 9 to 99.
Top names
Westraat and his committee, which includes former US Olympic middle-distance runner and Plett resident Ray Wicksell, and John Gawler of Paws, have promised to bring in top names such as previous Olympians Jean Verster, Johan Fourie and Marius Hugo-Schlechter.
The star attraction will be Sydney Maree, former SA and US world record holder.
Westraad said the race is about community inspiration and showcasing Plett at its best.
Many Plett businesses, such as architect Arno Struwig, Tsitsikamma Water, Sotto Mediterranean Restaurant, Plett Realty, Bootlegger, Carbon Endurance - and even North West University - have provided sponsorship to make the event possible.
The proposed route is a horseshoe-shaped track starting at Beacon Isle resort, running along Beacon Isle Road onto Oddlands and ending on Central Beach where a spectacular finish line awaits.
There will be plenty of space for spectators who will have the opportunity to rub shoulders with the celebrities and get specials autographs.
