PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS – Plett is about to get its own world-class Street Mile.
The inaugural Plett Street Mile will hit the streets on 20 December, bringing elite athletes, local runners, and the community together for a high-speed showcase of the town's beauty.
The event is the brainchild of Nico Westraat (retired Plett businessman), Ray Wicksell (former USA Olympic middle-distance runner), and Jean Verster (South Africa's top middle-distance coach and athletics agent).
John Gawler, the organiser of PAWS Amazing Race, is also on board to ensure a seamless race day.
The star attraction will be Sydney Maree, former SA and US world record holder.
Maree, who held the New York 5th Avenue Mile record for over 30 years, is set to sprint down Plett's streets alongside Wicksell, his long-time rival. Together, they'll also visit schools to inspire youth and promote the joy of running.
Like the Knysna Forest Marathon and Cycle Tour, the Plett Street Mile aims to attract runners not only from across South Africa, but also from abroad, to tackle the route framed by the town's iconic scenery.
Sponsorship
In the build-up, a free Heritage Day Colour Run on 24 September will splash participants in the colours of the South African flag at six stations, creating a moving SA flag across Plett.
"This is more than a race," says Westraat. "It's about community, inspiration, and showcasing Plett at its best."
A fast and exciting route that will display Plett's iconic beauty awaits participants, says Westraat.
Business sponsorship opportunities are open now for brands wanting to be part of this high-profile event.
