PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Following the murder and rape of a 63-year-old Plettenberg Bay resident in her upmarket country estate recently, local authorities have called on the public to consider making use of the Bull Horns panic button, designed for cellphones and tablets.
The operations head of the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) Otto Olivier explains that the app – available on Android and Apple – is linked to Plett Security, an active role player within the PBCPA.
This mobile panic button alerts not only selected individuals about the user’s emergency, but also signals a local security service provider informing them that the user is in trouble.
Olivier says people don't usually carry a panic button with them, but most people have their cellphones with them wherever they go.
The app allows the user to identify five people who will receive an SMS when the panic button is activated, informing the selected person/s of the user's emergency and pinpointing their location.
The app is also linked to several security service providers and in Plettenberg Bay’s case, Plett Security.
When the panic button is used, Plett Security’s control room would immediately be notified.
The app has several nonemergency features, including one through which crimes or observations of suspicious behaviour can be shared.
There is also a “follow me” feature, which is useful when loved ones go running or on a long trip.
The team in the control room would be able to check in on the user to ensure they reach their destination safely.
