Update
KNYSNA NEWS - No arrests have been made in connection with the deceased baby found in eDameni, Knysna two months ago.
The body of the lifeless infant was discovered by a young boy outside his residence when he saw a dog dragging the body on 13 July. He informed his mother who immediately called the police.
A woman suspected of being the mother was taken questioned by the police after community women assembled all expecting and new mothers for a physical inspection. One of the women, Nolandele Sikali, said when they opened the suspected mother's shirt and pressed her breasts, milk came out, “Breast milk only comes out after you have given birth. We stripped her naked and saw that she had indeed given birth.”
She said the incident has left the community traumatised and they do not understand why she has not been arrested.
''The children who were exposed to this atrocity still haven’t gone to counselling. If the incident can cripple elderly people it can leave the children scared for life. The police need to understand our frustration with this – she cannot be allowed to roam around the neighbourhood like nothing happened,” Sikali said.
In a previous meeting on the matter, a community leader known only as "General" said the family of the woman in question said they would also follow up on the case. In turn, the accused woman maintains there is nothing that links her to the baby. "'I am innocent," she told the Knysna Plett Heral last week.
Knysna police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies said DNA samples of the baby and the woman have been obtained and they are now waiting for results.
“Our next step rests entirely on the outcome of these tests,” he said.
