KNYSNA NEWS - The newly established Knysna Orchestra is gearing up for its debut, with auditions taking place on Saturday and Sunday from 14:00 to 16:00 at Oakhill High School.
The orchestra aims to become a cultural cornerstone in Knysna, focusing on performances driven by community events within the town and its surrounding areas.
To date, 25 musicians have expressed interest in joining the ensemble, and the recruitment process is still ongoing. Positions are open for a range of instrumentalists, including strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, piano, and rhythm section, as well as administrative and marketing support staff. Interested individuals who can read music are encouraged to apply via knysnaorchestra@gmail.com.
Meet the directors
Desmond Solomon (CEO) brings a wealth of experience, having performed with orchestras across South Africa and New Zealand. He is also the founder of the Community Philharmonic Orchestra. He now merges his business acumen with his musical background to spearhead this local initiative.
Joining him are Alton September, currently director of the Mandela Metro School of Arts in Port Elizabeth, and Philip Golson, a seasoned music educator and conductor with international credentials, including a masterclass in conducting from Tromsø University in Norway. Charl Lamini is serving as the director of finance.
The Knysna Orchestra promises to bring new artistic energy to the Garden Route, offering opportunities for local musicians and cultural enrichment for the wider community.
