PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements Tertuis Simmers has denounced vandalism to a housing unit that is set to be handed over to beneficiaries of the Qolweni community next month.
The project, which includes 169 homes, was a point of contention for several years until the completion mandate was handed over from the Bitou Municipality to Simmers’ department on 18 June last year.
Residents were unhappy about the slow progress of the project. This more than once sparked riots which brought Plettenberg Bay to a standstill.
Construction started shortly after the project was handed over to the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements.
Last Friday, 11 March, Simmers received reports that there was a security breach at the project site and that one of the units was vandalised and a window frame stolen.
A case has since been opened with local police.
“I condemn this criminal act in the strongest possible terms and welcome the criminal case that was opened,” Simmers said.
The first 66 units are scheduled to be handed over to residents at the end of April.
