KNYSNA NEWS - A Knysna family has publicly praised the town's firefighters for their swift response, professionalism and compassion after a house fire threatened to cause extensive damage to their home.
David Sand, whose home in Sun Valley Drive caught fire during the first use of a newly installed wood-burning fireplace, said the actions of the Knysna Fire Department prevented the blaze from causing far greater destruction.
According to Sand, the family did not at first notice that the chimney installation had ignited a fire in the ceiling cavity between the corrugated roof and the timber roof structure.
"What began as an ordinary evening quickly became a frightening experience," he said.
Sand said the firefighters arrived within minutes and immediately set about bringing the fire under control.
"The team, under the leadership of their captain, demonstrated exceptional professionalism, efficiency and calm throughout the operation. They worked tirelessly to ensure that every smouldering section of the roof and ceiling was completely extinguished, leaving nothing to chance."
He believes their thorough approach prevented the fire from reigniting and causing even greater damage.
Beyond extinguishing the blaze, it was the firefighters' compassion that left the biggest impression on the family.
"They were reassuring, friendly and incredibly supportive during a very stressful time. Even after the fire was out, they assisted with cleaning up water and debris from the removed ceilings, going well beyond what anyone could reasonably expect," Sand said.
He also expressed his gratitude to neighbours from the Costa Sarda and Sun Valley communities who rallied around the family in the aftermath of the fire.
"Your offers of help, assistance with the clean-up and thoughtful meals reminded us that in difficult times, community is one of our greatest strengths."
Reflecting on the experience, Sand said it had reinforced how fortunate Knysna residents are to have a dedicated and caring fire service.
"We have a fire service that responds with skill, dedication and genuine care for the people they serve. These men and women stand ready every day to protect our community, often placing themselves in harm's way on behalf of others."
He added that Knysna could be proud - not only of its firefighters, but also of the strong sense of community shown by local residents, which makes Knysna such a special place to call home.
"To every firefighter involved, and to our caring neighbours, please accept our heartfelt thanks. You have our deepest appreciation and admiration."
Knysna's Chief Fire Officer, Ian Bezuidenhout, said they are grateful for Sand's kind words. This is what their firefighters train for every day. "I'm incredibly proud of the professionalism, dedication and compassion they show when responding to incidents," he said.
"This incident is also a reminder for homeowners to ensure fireplaces and chimneys are correctly installed and inspected before use, and to remain vigilant during the first few fires."
