KNYSNA NEWS - There were smiles, laughter and plenty of warm-hearted community spirit at the Hornlee Civic Centre recently when The Changes of Knysna hosted their monthly pampering day for 125 elderly, disabled and disadvantaged residents.
This much-anticipated event offers more than just a day of pampering. It provides an opportunity for some of the community's most vulnerable residents to enjoy companionship, receive valuable information and feel appreciated.
Before the spoiling began, the guests were treated to informative talks by two guest speakers. Anneline Damons addressed the important topic of HIV and tuberculosis (TB), sharing practical information on prevention, testing and treatment, while encouraging community members to look after their health and seek assistance when needed.
She was followed by Mary-Lou Thysse, who gave the attendees a better understanding of the work carried out by the Lilita Palliative Care Unit at Knysna Provincial Hospital and the support it provides to patients and their families.
A representative from Sassa also attended the event and answered a number of questions from the audience. Many attendees expressed interest in the possibility of a dedicated Sassa office for Knysna, prompting a lively discussion on the topic.
Adding to the day's sense of care and generosity, six warm blankets donated by the Western Cape's premier, Alan Winde, were presented to the oldest attendees by DA member Katie de Wee.
The recipients were Marenda Cowley (85), Louisa Fredericks (82), Stevan Hendricks (82), David Arendse (82), Lisbit May (80) and Shirley Staander (78).
With the formalities complete, the guests settled down to enjoy a warm lunch before being treated to the pampering that has become the hallmark of these monthly gatherings.
