KNYSNA - "It's hard to explain a feeling you've spent your whole life chasing. My first world championships was that dream come true. I am so incredibly grateful to every single person who helped me get here," said elite cyclist Damon Terblanche after representing South Africa and his hometown, Knysna, at the World Mountain Bike Championships in Crans Montana, Switzerland, on 14 September.
The 22-year-old from Dam se Bos competed against the best mountain bikers in the world and proudly finished in 68th place - a strong showing for his debut on the global stage.
Damon's journey began at the age of 14 with the Knysna Sport Academy, where his talent was first recognised by coach Paulus Sigonyela and later refined under the guidance of Marike Vreken. His career highlights include winning the EXARRO category at the Cape Epic 2025, multiple Wine to Whales victories, and a win in the senior amateur men's category at Sani2C.
Getting to Switzerland was no easy feat. The championship was self-funded, with costs nearing R100 000. Damon initially feared the dream was out of reach.
But the Knysna community rallied behind him. A Swiss charity sponsored his bike and flights, while Knysna Municipality, the Knysna Daily Face Group, local donors, and sponsors helped cover the remaining costs.
Contributions from Knysna Sport Academy, LIBC, Derik Iken, and Damon's personal savings filled the final gap. Currently, Damon is also competing in the Pump for Peace race in Switzerland, a global initiative promoting diversity and access in cycling.
