KNYSNA NEWS - In a gesture of appreciation, the Knysna High School Interact club visited the Knysna fire department last week to thank them for the hard work they did over the past few months.
On Wednesday 6 September, the club arrived at the fire station with a home-baked cake and individual thank-you cards in tow.
According to Interact president Slade van Rooyen the learners really appreciated the firemen and wanted to thank them for the important role they play in society.
The club's motto is "service above self", said Slade, adding that the decision to visit the station was a collective one by all learners.
"We thought it would be appropriate given how amazing the Knysna fire department has been throughout the events of the fires," he said.
Making full use of the opportunity, the Interact members peppered fireman Wayne Spies with questions such as "how much sleep did you get during the fires?" and "how many firefighters were involved?".
They eventually ventured more tricky questions like "what caused the fires?", "how many different fires were there?", and "explain underground fires to us". Knysna High School Interact club members visit the Knysna fire department on 6 September.
Spies also shared his scariest moment of the fires with them, and explained what it takes to become a fireman to those who showed interest.
The Interact club is an association of learners from Grade 8 to 12 who are interested in community service and helping others.
