HEIDELBERG NEWS - It has been confirmed that a two-vehicle collision on the N2 between Swellendam and Heidelberg this morning, 7 July, has resulted in the death and injury of several people.
The Western Cape Department of Mobility’s chief director of traffic management, Maxine Bezuidenhout, said three people have lost their lives and 14 people have been injured due to the crash, which occurred at 10:00.
She said the three were declared dead on the scene.
South Cape Forum journalist Clive Pretorius, who was on the scene earlier this morning, said the collision was between a 22/25-seater bus and an SUV 8km from Heidelberg in the direction of Swellendam.
The Heidelberg Police’s spokesperson, Sergeant Keeno Fredericks, said of the three deceased, two had been occupants of the SUV and the third was a passenger on the bus.
The Heidelberg Police have opened a case of culpable homicide.
Fredericks said the total number of people who were on the bus and in the SUV is not known at this stage.
Bezuidenhout said the emergency services remain on the scene to provide medical assistance and manage the incident, and that the N2 is currently closed to traffic.
“Motorists travelling in the area are advised to use the detour via the Slangrivier turn-off towards Heidelberg, and to expect delays,” she said.
