KNYSNA NEWS - A timely donation of R3 000 is set to bolster efforts by Knysna Animal Welfare Society (Kaws) to tackle pet overpopulation, ahead of a mass sterilisation drive scheduled for mid-May in Rheenendal.
Local resident Kathy Michaelides handed over the contribution to veterinarian Dr Ernst Arndt, chairperson of Kaws, during a brief presentation last Friday. The funds were donated on behalf of the Gardening in Knysna Garden Club.
Michaelides pointed out the urgent need for intervention, noting that uncontrolled breeding of dogs and cats remains one of the leading causes of animal suffering worldwide, particularly in communities where pet owners lack the financial means to provide adequate care.
"Welfare organisations like Kaws play a critical role in addressing this issue through education and the sterilisation of pets."
The upcoming initiative in Rheenendal will see veterinarians and volunteers offering their services free of charge for a full day, with the aim of sterilising as many dogs and cats as possible within the community.
Arndt expressed appreciation for the donation, emphasising that contributions of this nature are vital to the success of such outreach programmes.
"This valued support will help cover essential veterinary consumables, including surgical gloves and suture materials, which are necessary to carry out the procedures safely and efficiently."
Kaws continues to encourage community involvement and support as it works to reduce animal suffering and promote responsible pet ownership across the greater Knysna area.
