"On Thursday evening (March 6) I just broke down," admits Dirkse, who is known for her upbeat personality and enthusiasm for life. "I just became so afraid when I realised that there was weekend ahead and I had no idea whether the power would fail again or not. It made me feel so vulnerable and helpless. I'm not usually like that, but because I almost died [last] week ... It's just indescribable how you feel when you can't breathe - even when they rush me to hospital, every second seems like an eternity."
A desperate Dirkse made a plea for help on Friday afternoon, March 7, begging anyone who could, to help her find a generator for the nebuliser which she depends on for several hours every afternoon and often during the night.
Within minutes of receiving Dirkse's request via email from the Knysna-Plett Herald, Willem Booysen, manager of Tuinroete Agri called to say that they would be able to help Dirkse. Dirkse received the news with sobs of relief!
Not only did Booysen arrange a generator, he also ordered a truck to deliver it to her house in Hornlee and made sure that it was in top working condition, had enough fuel and even supplied an extention cord long enough to reach Dirkse's bedroom.
"I don't know how to say thank you! Really? Are they really bringing me a generator right now?" an overwhelmed Dirkse repeated on Friday afternoon.
The Knysna community applauds Tuinroete Agri and Booysen's whole team for their generosity and for helping to extend Dirkse's life.
"They have saved my life. It is God, but He used them. They are my heroes. May He be their generator of power!" she cried and laughed all at once.
