PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - If the current trend of vandalism at pump stations continues, it could lead to regular, prolonged power outages. Even worse, sewage could overflow in people's homes, into the streets, and other facilities.
Following a rise in vandalism on pump stations in Plettenberg Bay, the Bitou Municipality has warned that damage to pump stations could pose a serious threat.
Municipal spokesperson Andile Namntu said that they had noticed a rise in vandalism at pump stations across town.
"Criminals target these pump stations to steal, among others, diesel, batteries and electrical cables," he said.
"The vandalism and destruction of these pump stations are posing a huge threat to service delivery. Among these are the regular power outages that can occur for abnormally long hours. However, the biggest concern is the impact it could have on the sewage systems of the town. Sewage blockages and spills will become uncontrollable."
If overflows occur inside buildings and into streets, he said, "the stench will become unbearable and not to mention the threat to human health and dignity."
He said the municipality is doing as much as it can to fight this scourge.
"However, with limited resources, it is extremely difficult to deal with this. We call on all stakeholders to assist us in fighting for the end of vandalism and theft of cables. It is a threat to service delivery."
