KNYSNA - An amount of R203 000 has been allocated for disbursement to 30 local charitable organisations as part of Knysna Municipality's annual Grant-in-Aid programme.
Knysna's mayor, Thando Matika, officially launched the initiative on Friday 26 June by embarking on a series of site visits to beneficiary organisations across the municipality.
The handovers continued on Saturday 27 June, and the mayor is scheduled to visit additional organisations receiving grant funding.
This year's programme has been structured differently. Grant handovers are taking place at the organisations' respective premises rather than at a central venue.
This approach allows the municipality to engage directly with beneficiaries while gaining first-hand insight into the invaluable work they do in communities throughout Knysna.
Many of the organisations operate on a voluntary basis, often with limited resources and little public recognition, yet continue to provide essential services and support to vulnerable residents.
During the engagements, the municipality highlighted the important role non-governmental organisations, community groups and sports clubs play in strengthening community well-being, promoting social cohesion and delivering much-needed support services.
It was noted that their contribution to society extends far beyond financial value. Matika commended their dedication and selfless commitment, acknowledging the significant impact they have on improving the lives of residents across the municipality.
The municipality said partnerships with community organisations remain vital in building a stronger, more inclusive and caring Knysna, and the annual Grant-in-Aid programme serve as an investment in those working tirelessly to uplift local communities.
