PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The level-headedness of a Plettenberg Bay teenager was commended after she walked in on suspects in the process of burgling her home.
Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) operations head Otto Olivier said that on Monday 29 January at about 15:40, the PBCPA's reaction group received an alert of a burglary in Sanganer Road.
"The Plett K9 unit requested back-up as the suspects were fleeing in the direction of Pachena Point while the homeowner was giving chase," Olivier said.
Four minutes after the alert was received, one of two suspects was spotted and apprehended by members of the K9 unit.
"Various security partners responded to assist. PBCPA members assisted by giving updates via the PBCPA React WhatsApp group of the suspects' movement.
The area was meticulously searched for the second suspect, who unfortunately escaped with a cellphone. His identity is known."
Olivier said that the homeowner's teenage daughter played a key role in assisting responders to apprehend the first suspect.
"We must applaud the cool-headed teenager for her resilience and swift action when she walked in on the criminals inside their house.
"Not only did she immediately flee to her bedroom and locked herself in, but she also gave a perfect description of the offenders to her father when she phoned him for assistance. This is an excellent example of awareness and on-point survival action."
Olivier said the suspects fled the scene on her father's arrival at their house. While chasing the suspects, he phoned Plett K9 for assistance.
"Most of the stolen items were recovered from the first offender and he gave up the name of the second offender."
Olivier commended all the security stakeholders who played a role in the response.
