KNYSNA NEWS - The town's Red Eagles FC missed a chance to secure promotion to the Safa Eden Regional Men's League after finishing third in the mini play-offs in George last weekend.
The Eagles, who were promoted to the Regional Men's League during the 2021/22 season, were relegated last season and returned to the Knysna Local Football Association.
Their latest promotion bid got off to a slow start, and the team dropped crucial points along the way.
The play-offs started on Friday evening, 21 August, when the Red Eagles were scheduled to face Y2K FC in Knysna. However, the Red Eagles were awarded the match in the boardroom for reasons not provided.
On Saturday morning, the Eagles drew 2-2 against Mossel Bay side Zobo FC at Lawaaikamp Stadium before bouncing back with a 3-1 victory over the Pirates FC from Oudtshoorn. The Red Eagles' fourth match proved costly as they went down 3-2 to FC Kwano at the Maraiskamp Sport Grounds in Parkdene on Sunday morning, dropping valuable points in the promotion race.
Their final encounter against hosts Raul Stars was one of the tournament's highlights, with qualification still at stake.
However, it was not to be for the Knysna side as Raul Stars secured a narrow 1-0 victory.
The defeat brought Red Eagles' play-off campaign to an end in third place on seven points, ending their hopes of an immediate return to the Safa Eden Regional Men's League.
