SEDGEFIELD NEWS - Nearly a thousand people braved the chilly conditions to take part in the annual Pink Walk on Saturday 17 October, showing their support for breast cancer awareness and local palliative care services.
A total of 980 people took part, an increase of 128 on last year’s turnout.
The participants gathered at 08:30 before setting off on the 4.5km route around Sedgefield Island. Refreshment stations along the way kept the walkers hydrated, while local singers and dancers added to the festive atmosphere.
The event was organised by resident Adele van Zyl, with support from numerous sponsors and businesses in Sedgefield and the surrounding area.
Dr Lee-Ann Jones of Eden Oncology addressed the gathering, highlighting the importance of early detection and community support in the fight against breast cancer.
The event also raised funds for Hospice Sedgefield, which provides palliative care and support services to people in the local community. Donations and raffle ticket sales contributed to the fundraising effort.
Hospice representatives thanked everyone who participated, donated or helped make the event possible.
The final amount raised for the cause was still being confirmed at the time of going to press.
