PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Members of the Kranshoek community recently came together to take part in a walk to commemorate and raise awareness of the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign.
The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign) is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).
Each year local authorities and members of the community get behind the campaign in a bid to raise awareness of the pandemic that is violence against women and children in South Africa.
On 29 November, the community of Kranshoek joined hands with the Kranshoek Neighbourhood Watch, local schools and crèches, retirement homes, Kwanokuthula police, the local traffic department and municipal staff from the Kranshoek library.
Their walk started at the library and they snaked their way through the Kranshoek community, with members of the community regularly joining in along the way.
There were various roleplayers involved in the 16 Days of Activism walk in Kranshoek.
During the walk, members of the group consistently called out to the community with a loud-hailer to encourage people to speak up against bullying among school children as well as domestic violence within the home.
"It was a massive success this year, everyone got very actively involved," said assistant librarian at the Kranshoek library, Stella Jantjies.
The walk was escorted around Kranshoek by a police vehicle.
