This event was arranged following the tragic bus accident on Wednesday, August 24 which left an entire community and its children traumatised. The event included the lighting of 15 candles in memory of the 14 children and their driver, Colin Pyl who lost their lives in the Rheenendal accident, when the bus in which they were travelling to school tumbled into a river at Kasat-se-Drift.
"Our aim for this event was to prioritise the safety of our children in our societies and also to empower children with knowledge as much as we can," explained Nomawethu Mweli, organiser of the event.
The children were addressed by fire brigade officials, police officials and social workers.
The children who attended this event were from Percy Mdala High School, Thembelitsha Primary School, Sunridge Primary School and Hornlee Primary School.
These learners also took part in a debate session themed, SA is a safe country for our children.
"It was really a great event for the children. I regret not taking my children with me. It was very informative and vital. The children seemed to enjoy it very much," said a parent who attended the event.
The children were also motivated by guests speakers to have a vision in order to reach their goals.
Mad About Art expressed its condolences with the deeply traumatised Rheenendal families and school. "We at Mad About Art would like to extend our condolences to all the families and the school. May their souls rest in peace."
