KNYSNA NEWS - Young Knysna rugby talent Bradley Saptou continues his meteoric rise after being selected to represent the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS) 7s squad on tour in Dubai.
Following his return, Saptou will join the SWD Eagles senior training squad, invited personally by newly appointed head coach Heyneke Meyer - a major milestone for the 21-year-old.
A dream years in the making
Saptou's rugby journey began at Fraaisig Primary before he moved to Concordia Primary, where he was coached by Marshall Shaheed Willemse, a figure he credits for setting the foundation of his success.
He later earned a bursary to Witteberg High School in the Free State, where his passion for the sport deepened.
Despite financial hurdles after matric, Saptou refused to give up. He played for Jaguars and Knysna United, attended SWD U21 trials, and re-entered the SAS Rugby Academy this year. His breakout performance at the Fast Forward News24 Sevens Tournament, where he became a "try-scoring machine," caught the attention of selectors and ultimately earned him his spot on the Dubai tour.
Family pride and community support
Bradley's parents, Brandel and Shahida Saptou, say his determination has inspired not only them but the entire Knysna community.
"My son never gave up on his dream," said his mother, Shahida.
"From the time he was a little boy, he wanted to be a professional rugby player. No injury, no setback ever stopped him. We stand behind him 100%."
Brandel added, "I am proud to be his father. Proud of the man he is becoming and the fact that he always gets back up. May this be the beginning of even bigger things."
Saptou's grandmother, Johanna Malgraaf, also expressed her joy:
"I am so proud - and grateful that I am still alive to witness his achievements. I always tell him: the best support you can have is a praying grandmother standing behind you."
A community favourite
In a Facebook fan poll launched on 19 November on the Knysna United RFC page, 62% of voters named Saptou as Best Player of the Year, highlighting his impact both on and off the field.
Words before departure
Saptou, who flew to Dubai on Tuesday 25 November, said: "I just kept working, even when things were tough. SAS believed in me, SWD believed in me, and I'm grateful. I'm ready to give my best - for my family, my coaches, and everyone who supported me."
