KNYSNA NEWS - Over this past weekend, the Knysna Parkrun marked a significant milestone - its 10th anniversary.
The popular weekly 5km event, which draws participants from all walks of life, celebrated its decade-long success with a festive atmosphere that began bright and early on Saturday morning.
Celebrations at 07:00
More than 300 participants gathered to take part in the anniversary run, with celebrations kicking off at 07:00, ahead of the usual start time of 08:00. The run began as usual from George Rex Drive, but the spirit of the event was anything but ordinary. A mix of seasoned regulars and new faces joined in to commemorate the occasion, creating a vibrant and welcoming environment for all.
Kenny Wilkinson, the race director, explains some procedures to the newcomers in the huddle.
Cake and fruit
After the race the athletes indulged in some delicious cake and fruit.
The Knysna Parkrun has come a long way since its inception on January 31, 2015. Established as a means of promoting fitness and fostering camaraderie among Knysna residents, the event has grown exponentially over the years.
Expressed pride
Gareth Terblanche, who was instrumental in launching the parkrun, expressed his pride in the community that has formed around the weekly event.
"Ten years ago, we started this event with a simple goal in mind: to bring people together through fitness. We've certainly seen that vision grow beyond what we imagined," Terblanche said in an interview with the Knysna-Plett Herald.
"It's amazing to see so many people participate, and we're thrilled that new faces are still joining us."
Another landmark moment for the event came in August last year when the 400th parkrun was held - another testament to the longevity and appeal of the community-driven initiative.
Giving back to community
But it's not all about running at the Knysna Parkrun. The event has made it a tradition to give back to the community.
One of the highlights of the year is their annual donation of marshmallows and Easter eggs to less fortunate families during the Easter holiday.
This charitable gesture has become a beloved aspect of the parkrun, showing that the spirit of giving and community is just as important as fitness.
