RHEENENDAL NEWS - If you thought that you would never see the sports of tennis and cricket go hand in hand, you are sorely mistaken.
Next week the inaugural SA Tennis Cricket Championships will be held at Sport at Backward Point outside Rheenendal.
While it might be new to South Africa, tennis ball cricket is big in some parts of the world, especially India, as it allows many people of all ages, shapes and sizes who might not be able to play "proper cricket", to still enjoy the game.
The first-ever SA Tennis Cricket Championships is designed for one and all, as a serious tournament with a fun twist. It will also duly operate as a fundraiser for Christmas for Kids, an NPO registered by tourism marketing agency Africa Complete, that benefits and supports children's homes right around South Africa.
For next weekend's tournament, teams will consist of eight players and matches will be played in two innings of 10 overs each. Six players must bowl one over each and the remaining two bowl a maximum of two overs.
Batters will retire once they reach 20 runs, and may only return once the rest of their side has been bowled out. The boundaries will be shortened and matches will be played on normal pitches.
There are still spots available for prospective teams, so if you would like to get in on the action, you can contact Peter Heyns on 083 528 7443 or via email at info@africacomplete.co.za.
