PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The Southern Cape's hopes of consistent representation in the prestigious ABC Motsepe Western Cape Provincial League have been dashed once more, after the shock sale of Oriented Birds FC's league status to Cape Town-based Sea Point Swift FC.
Birds' sudden exit stuns fans
In a move that caught many supporters off guard, Oriented Birds FC, who had only earned promotion to the provincial league in the 2022/23 season, sold their status during the off-season.
Despite a strong showing in the second division over the past two campaigns, financial strain ultimately grounded the Birds.
Lack of sponsorship
Oriented Birds FC chairperson Zitho Lawrance Tyomtwana expressed deep regret over the club's withdrawal but highlighted the challenges they faced.
"We were operating with very limited resources. There was no major sponsorship and we had difficulty accessing training facilities such as the Kwano sports field. Our players and coaching staff gave everything, despite the odds. Their commitment was never in question. But to keep going at this level, we needed more power behind the scenes, more support, better infrastructure and solid financial backing," he said.
Tyomtwana stressed that the decision to sell the club's status was not taken lightly.
"As a team, we've always believed in Oriented Birds' potential. We are committed to growing football in our town and putting our community on the map. But we must be realistic."
He confirmed that the club would use this period to regroup, refocus, and strategise for the future, with hopes of returning stronger and more prepared.
