KNYSNA NEWS - The football communities of the Safa Eden Region and the greater Knysna area were left in mourning following the recent passing of Simphiwe Bethwel Mene (41), chairperson of Voota FC.
Mene was laid to rest in Knysna last weekend, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, mentorship and passion for sport.
A great leader
Born in Cape Town and raised in the Garden Route District, Mene was widely regarded as a remarkable leader both on and off the field. He began his education at Thembelitsha Primary School and later matriculated from Percy Mdala High School in Knysna. After finishing school, he moved to Cape Town to pursue higher education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Before dedicating himself to football, Mene excelled in bodybuilding, winning numerous accolades and building a foundation of discipline and determination that would later define his sporting career.
Passion for the game
Mene's professional journey was diverse, including stints at Game Stores, Petro SA and the Milnerton Municipality, as well as a brief period working in Johannesburg. Despite exploring opportunities elsewhere, he returned to Knysna, opening a fitness gym and sharing his love of sports with the local community.
It was through football that Mene truly made his mark. As chairperson and coach of Voota FC, he became a mentor to countless young players across the Eden Region.
His dedication to developing talent, fostering teamwork, and promoting sportsmanship earned him respect and admiration throughout the local football community.
A devoted father and committed sports leader, Mene's legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of athletes in Knysna and beyond.
Voota FC and the Eden Region football community have expressed deep condolences to Mene's family, friends, and all who were touched by his leadership.
