GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Garden Route Badgers women will be entering the 2024/2025 season with renewed hope after a former Proteas player and three talented others were contracted.
South Western Districts Cricket revealed the final women's squad on Monday 27 May.
After an inconsistent 2023/24 season, the Badgers women needed some fresh input to improve their log standings and remain in the top division. The new acquisitions are the former Proteas player and top order wicket keeper/batter Nadine Moodley, CSA Girls u.19 player of the 2022 tournament Gizelle Abrahams (from Boland), all-rounder Nicolien Janse van Rensburg (from the Titans) and seam bowler Vuyolwethu Bonya, who returns from the EP women.
Wicket keeper/batter Mieke de Ridder will remain with the Badgers. Tazmin Brits, the international star of the past two seasons, has opted to move to the Lions.
To strengthen the depth of the squad, two high-performance contracts were also awarded. The experienced top order batter Jana Nell joins the Badgers on a high-performance contract along with Badgers stalwart Julandi Saayman.
Head coach Martelize van der Merwe said they have an exciting season ahead. "I am confident that with the group of players contracted, the Badgers ladies will remain a professional team," she said.
SWD Cricket Services manager Gary Moos said this will be their second season in the professional environment, and they have great expectations with the squad that was assembled.
"We trust to improve on performances, with our aim to reach our objectives in the new season," Moos commented.
The contracted squad members are:
Annerie Dercksen, Asakahe Nyovane, Gizelle Abrahams, Jané Winster, Julia Hoal, Khayakazi Mathe, Micaéla Andrews, Mieke de Ridder, Nadine Moodley, Nicolien Janse van Rensburg and Vuyolwethu Bonya.
