KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Cavaliers Cricket Club booked its place in the SWD Cricket T20 semi-finals with a comprehensive 122-run victory over Union Stars in their quarter-final at Backward Point in Rheenendal last Saturday.
Playing on what the club described as arguably the best cricket ground in the Garden Route, the Cavaliers produced a formidable batting performance before their bowlers dismissed Union Stars for 117 runs.
Captain Maurice White won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that paid immediate dividends as opening batters JP Ellis and Hayden Sweet again displayed outstanding form. The pair recorded their third consecutive 100-run partnership, putting on an excellent 151 runs for the first wicket in just 12.4 overs.
Ellis led the charge with a blistering 152 off 77 balls, striking 17 fours and eight sixes, while Sweet contributed 47 off 27 deliveries. Mesuli Vuba added 26 off 17 balls as the Cavaliers finished on a formidable 239/1 after their allotted 20 overs.
A career-best T20 innings
Asked whether this is his best innings ever, Ellis said: "Yes, definitely in T20 cricket. Scoring 152 off just 77 balls is my highest score in the format, so it is a special milestone for me. It's always rewarding when the hard work and preparation come together like that, especially in an important match."
Ellis said he was in good touch from the opening overs, when he was timing the ball well, finding gaps and feeling comfortable at the crease.
"Sometimes you get those days when everything seems to fall into place, and yesterday was one of those days. I could feel early on that I was in good touch and ready to make the most of it," he said.
The Cavaliers' positive approach was central to their batting success. Ellis explained that the plan was to put the bowlers under pressure and make full use of the powerplay and fielding restrictions. "Once I found my rhythm, I focused on maintaining that momentum and playing with good timing rather than trying to hit every ball as hard as possible."
Facing a quality opponent in Union Stars, the Cavaliers were determined to attack from the outset while remaining disciplined as the innings progressed.
The 151-run opening stand also reflected the value of the partnership between Ellis and Sweet, who has been in outstanding form himself.
"Having an experienced opening partner like Hayden Sweet makes a massive difference. We complement each other well at the crease. He regularly reminded me to keep my shape, maintain a strong base and trust my timing. I sometimes tend to try to hit the leather off the ball, so those reminders were important."
Bowlers finish the job
With 240 runs required for victory, Union Stars came out firing in their chase, but the Cavaliers' experienced bowling attack soon took control.
Francois Bonthuys delivered a decisive spell, taking four wickets for just 21 runs in his four overs. Werner Mels and Sweet claimed two wickets apiece as the Cavaliers bowled Union Stars out for 117, securing a comprehensive 122-run win.
While the victory ensured the Cavaliers progressed to the SWD semi-finals, Ellis emphasised that his individual achievement takes the back seat to the team's success.
"Everyone celebrates individual achievements because we understand that these performances contribute to the success of the team and the club as a whole. The atmosphere was fantastic, but ultimately, the result and getting through to the semi-finals were what mattered most to us."
The Cavaliers will face Harlequins Forces at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn this coming Saturday in what Ellis expects to be another tough challenge.
"We will approach the match with confidence, stick to our game plan and leave everything out on the field. If I can contribute another big innings to help Cavaliers win, that would be fantastic, but the team's success will always come first," Ellis reiterated.
