KNYSNA NEWS - Residents of Knysna have gathered at Knysna Municipality's administration building in Clyde Street to take a stand at the lack of service delivery in recent times.
The town has been plagued with severe issues surrounding refuse collection, water availability, electricity issues, amongst others, and residents have elected to take a stand today, Thursday 15 February.
The protest coincides with an ordinary council meeting being held in the Knysna Council Chambers where the service delivery issues will be one of the many topics discussed as part of the agenda.
Residents gathered at 10:00 this morning, the same time that the council meeting began, in order to engage in a peaceful protest that was initially planned by Hornlee-based community organisation Knysna United.
It is in fact in Hornlee and other nearby areas that the brunt of the lack of service delivery is being felt, where residents have been without any water for days on end during the past two months.
The group of residents is unhappy with the service delivery currently being experienced in Knysna.
This has led to members of the public and other residents of Knysna holding collection drives in order to gather and cart water to the areas that need it the most.
A public meeting was held in Hornlee to address some of the issues last week, and residents are demanding action and improved service delivery from the municipality.
After waiting for two long months, Gift of the Givers was yesterday, Wednesday 14 February, at last given permission to provide emergency water relief to the residents of Hornlee and other areas who daily live with bone dry taps.
The residents protesting and picketing at the municipal buildings this morning demand to have their voices heard by council, but they are yet to be addressed by a municipal official.
Winde slams Knysna's rulers
During the Sona feedback over the last two days, Western Cape premier, Alan Winde lashed out at the Knysna ruling ANC-EFF-Patriotic Alliance-PBI coalition saying the town has been captured. He also referred to the body that was found in a water reservoir in November last year. He said the body had been in the water system for two weeks and when it was pulled from the reservoir "the arm came off."
Winde dared President Cyril Ramaphosa to help the Western Cape Government put Knysna under administration. "That's exactly what needs to happen," Wnde said.
