KNYSNA NEWS - A young woman in her early 20s was killed and three others including her mother were severely injured when they were hit by a bakkie on Main Road in Knysna (which forms part of the N2), across from St James Memorial Square.
According to information from Southern Cape police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, 24 July, at about 02:00.
"Preliminary information suggests that the accused in the case, a man in his mid-thirties, lost control of his Toyota single cab bakkie and hit the deceased and a few other bystanders, including the mother of the deceased," Pojie said.
According to Pojie, it is alleged that the suspect and other club-goers had an altercation inside a club situated in the Main Road. "The fight continued and expanded to the outside, whereafter the suspect allegedly jumped into his vehicle and sped towards the people he fought with. He missed them and hit the bystanders."
He indicated that the three injured individuals - two men and a woman who is believed to be the mother of the deceased - were admitted to Knysna Provincial Hospital. "Later the woman was transferred to George Hospital for further medical attention."
The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and is expected to make his first court appearance in the Knysna Magistrate's Court today on a charge of murder. "The possibility that more charges could be added is not excluded. Investigation continues," Pojie said.
In the day following the accident a video showing horrific detail of the aftermath of the incident has been circulated on social media. Out of respect for the deceased and the family, Knysna-Plett Herald would like to urge members of the public to please refrain from circulating this video.
