PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Ian Watt, a Plettenberg Bay cyclist who was in his early seventies, died in an accident during the Tour de Plett cycle race yesterday, Saturday 11 November.
According to a friend, Watt practised as a dentist in Johannesburg and he and his wife Nadine retired to Plettenberg Bay some years back.
Watt was an active member of both the Plett MTB club and Club 100.
He also cycled with the Kwano Academy.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed Watt was a contestant in the annual Tour de Plett cycle tour.
"According to reports he lost control and rode into a ditch next to the track. He was found unresponsive. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death," said Van Wyk
Race organiser James Stewart described it as a “tragic event” and said out of respect for the man’s family, he was not in a position to comment.
Stewart said the incident took place during mid-to-late morning in Bitou on a rural farm. The Tour de Plett, an annual event that has been held for a number of years, traverses 18 different properties. It is a Cycling South Africa-sanctioned event.
The Tour de Plett consists of 60km, 38km and 18km options.
"The event offers something for everyone. It was a tragic event and out of respect for the family I do not wish to further comment," said Stewart.
